When to go: From January to April (Drier season)
Where to go: Havana and Varadero
Downside: The communist administration has almost brought the country to the stone ages. Poor people working for nothing, for other poor people. All the houses are destroyed except the international hotel and the governemnt buildings. And the media is so well controlled that the majority of the population simply can´t see the real world outside.
Our Experiences: There are two things to do in Cuba: Number 1) Go to Varadero and stay inside a good international resort. Eat, go to the beach, live and sleep in there. The country will seem fine and you will be happy. Varadero Beach is a true paradise. White sands and a perfect blue crystal sea. We have stayed at the Melia Hotel, which is the most expensive and may equal to some 4 stars Miami Hotel. It is ok. Number 2) Make a tour in Havana. You will be in a good conditions car ( Apart from all the other cars, the taxis are ok ) and you will see the city outside, but not wanting to interact with what you see. Havana is like a bombed city with some make ups here and there. It is even more interesting if you look at some Havana pictures from the 50´s when it was very glamorous, and compare to what you see now. So sad. We hope the communism era ends up soon, that the country gets better and the people can live free.
Hotels we recommend: Melia (Varadero)
