A real problem for food lovers when travelling is how to find good restaurants. There are easy big mistakes you can make but there ae also some clever actions you may take. As food lovers and worldwide experienced travelers, we have made every possible mistake, before finding efficient ways to look for a good restaurant. Check our tips:
1) Never, ever, ever use TripAdvisor. (We have said this before) This app was useful in the beginning, many years ago, before the restaurant owners find out how to trick it. Aren’t you sure about that ? So let’s make a quick test. Check in TripAdvisor right now what are the best restaurants in your home town. Do it and prepare for some laughs. Are you shocked? Probably you may have found some real good restaurants you know, but also some small stinky places you have never heard about standing better ranked. No, don´t try them! They are all bad. They are all fake reviews created by robots in some remote country. Useless tool!
2)Never ask a taxi driver or anyone from your hotel staff. They will almost never recommend what they really find it’s the best. Instead they will address you to the ones they earn money for bringing in clients, simply because they work in the tourism industry. It´s their job. They are not your friends, despite they behave like.
3) Don´t go for good restaurants near landmarks or city attractions. ( We have said that before), The good restaurants attracts people because of its food, and not because they are on your way. Restaurant owners who want to get easy money from tourists set their business near the crowd to conveniently attract them. Consider that almost no tourist will return to that same attraction, so it doesn´t matter for the restaurant owner to serve good or bad food, when no one is comming back.
4) Look for crowded restaurants in secondary streets away from the crowd. Preferable with no lightened signs or colorful ads. If the place is not well exposed and lots of people are there eating, the only reason must be the food. Or at least the food will be a good deal!. Also look for restaurant where only the locals are eating. The less tourist in the place the more responsible the owner must be, as he will be dealing with his everyday local clients, who always come back.
5) For the high-end luxury travelers, and gastronomy lovers, we strongly suggest the Guide Michelin. It is the only guide we ( still ) trust. We have been using it for 20 years with more than 95% accuracy. We have been to the best tables around the world since then and we do recommend it. The Aquapana “ 50 Best Restaurants” guide has some value to, but we have had a few bad experiences when trusting some of their ranked restaurants. Check more about the high-end gastronomy here.
